A kilt isn’t just for weddings. It’s one of the few outfits that genuinely earns its keep across the calendar: Burns Night, Highland games, ceilidhs, graduations, family celebrations, and any occasion that deserves a bit more presence than a standard suit.
At Salters, we kit out far more than just wedding parties. If you’re after the full Highland look for any event, here’s everything you need to know.
Burns Night and Scottish celebrations
Burns Night is one of the few nights of the year worth dressing properly for. Whether you’re hosting, giving the address, reciting the Selkirk Grace, or just attending as a guest, a full kilt outfit adds exactly the right amount of ceremony to the evening, without you needing to own one for the other 364 days of the year.
It’s also a very busy week for kilt hire. Burns Night falls on the same date every year, which means demand can be high. If late January is on your calendar, it’s worth booking your fitting in good time rather than leaving it to the week before. We’ll always do what we can for last-minute requests, but early booking gives you the best choice of tartan, size, and accessories.
Highland games, ceilidhs, and general occasions
You don’t need a special reason to wear a kilt well. Highland games and Highland gatherings have a long tradition of formal Scottish dress, even among spectators, and a properly fitted kilt fits the spirit of the day far better than a suit ever could.
Ceilidhs are another occasion where kilts have become the norm rather than the exception, particularly for anyone in the wedding party, a band, or hosting the evening. Add graduations, milestone birthdays, christenings, and family gatherings to the list, and you start to see how often a kilt is the right call rather than the unusual one.
Hiring means you get the full, properly tailored look without the long-term cost or commitment of buying. Most people only need a kilt outfit a handful of times a year, so hiring makes far more practical sense than owning one that sits in a wardrobe for months at a time.
What’s included
Kilt hire with us isn’t just the kilt itself. A full outfit typically includes the kilt, jacket, sporran, and the finishing details that pull the whole look together: hose, flashes, brogues, and a sgian dubh tucked into the sock for the traditional finish.
We put the outfit together as a complete package rather than a collection of separate pieces hired one at a time. That means everything is colour-matched and proportioned correctly from the start, rather than you trying to coordinate it yourself. If you’re attending as part of a group, whether that’s a Burns Night table or a Highland games team, we can also help make sure everyone’s outfits work well together without looking identikit.
Tartan and styling
We’ve got a range of tartans to choose from, from classic options through to more contemporary and muted choices, and we’ll help you pick something that suits the occasion and your own colouring, and, if it’s a group event, the people you’re standing alongside.
You don’t need to walk in knowing exactly what you want. Talk us through the occasion, and we’ll narrow it down from there.
Getting the fit right
We don’t hold kilts in store, so rather than fitting you in a kilt itself, we take your measurements using a dinner suit fitting, which gives us everything we need to order the correct kilt size for you. Waist, hip, and length are all taken properly in person rather than guessed from a size chart, which is one of the most common mistakes people make when ordering a kilt online without ever trying anything on.
It’s a straightforward process and doesn’t take long, but it makes all the difference. Get in touch to book your fitting, and we’ll take it from there, sorting the sizing and ordering everything in plenty of time for your event.
