Black Tie Season: What to Wear to the Season’s Big Events

The invitations start landing in October. A winter ball, a charity dinner, a New Year’s Eve party. Then the dress code appears at the bottom, and suddenly everyone is Googling what “black tie” actually means.

At Salters, autumn and winter are one of our busiest times for formalwear hire. Here’s how to get the look right for the season’s big formal nights.

What black tie actually means

Black tie means a dinner suit: black dinner jacket, matching trousers, a white dress shirt, a black bow tie and polished black shoes. It’s a classic for a reason, and it looks good on almost everyone.

If the invitation says “formal” or “smart” rather than black tie, a well-fitted dark suit with a crisp shirt and tie will do the job. If you’re not sure which the host means, ask them. It’s far better to know in advance than to find out at the door.

Why hire makes sense

Most people need a dinner suit once or twice a year at most. Hiring means you get a properly fitted outfit for the night without paying to own something that spends the rest of the year in a wardrobe.

Winter balls and charity dinners

These are usually proper black tie evenings, often with a sit-down meal and dancing afterwards. Comfort matters as much as looks. You need to be able to sit, stand and move in the jacket, and the trousers should be the right length for dancing in. This is where a proper fitting earns its keep.

New Year’s Eve

If you’re seeing the year out at a formal party, a dinner suit is hard to beat. It’s also one of the busiest nights of the year for hire, so don’t leave it late.

Getting the details right

  • Bow tie or tie: a bow tie goes with a dinner suit; a standard tie goes with a lounge suit. Don’t mix them up.
  • Waistcoat or cummerbund: either one covers the waist and finishes the look properly.
  • Shirt: a white dress shirt is the classic choice for black tie.
  • Shoes: polished and black. People notice more than you’d think.
  • Cufflinks and pocket square: small touches that make a big difference in photos.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between black tie and a normal suit?

Black tie means a dinner suit: a black dinner jacket and matching trousers, worn with a white dress shirt, black bow tie and polished black shoes. A normal suit is a lounge suit, which is worn with a standard tie and suits less formal events.

Can I wear a lounge suit to a black tie event?

It’s best not to. Black tie means a dinner suit, and turning up in an ordinary suit can leave you feeling underdressed. If you’re unsure what the host expects, ask them before you book.

Do I have to wear a bow tie?

For black tie, yes. A bow tie is part of the traditional dinner suit look. A standard tie is for lounge suits.

When should I book my fitting?

We recommend booking at least six weeks before your event. We’re appointment-only, and winter black-tie dates fill up quickly. If your event is closer than that, get in touch anyway, and we’ll do everything we can.

Will I try on the outfit I’ll actually be wearing?

Yes. We take your measurements properly in person, and you try on the actual outfit you’ll be wearing to your event, so you can check the fit before you leave.

What do I need besides the jacket and trousers?

A dress shirt, a bow tie and polished black shoes are the essentials. A waistcoat or cummerbund, cufflinks and a pocket square finish the look. We’ll talk you through the options at your fitting so everything works together.

Do you hire outfits to customers outside Rugby?

Yes. We regularly welcome customers from across Warwickshire and Northamptonshire, including Lutterworth, Daventry, Leamington Spa, Coventry and Northampton.

What if I’m not sure what the dress code means?

Bring your invitation along to your appointment, and we’ll help you work out what’s expected, then put together an outfit to suit.
