Choosing a Groom’s Suit for Your Wedding

While many of the decisions will be made either by the bride and her parents/friends, or together as a couple, when it comes to choosing a groom’s suit for your wedding, this is left largely to the groom. While a lot will depend on your own personal style, tastes and preference, there are other things to consider when choosing the style, colour and fabric of your suit. Choosing the perfect wedding suit

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and you want to look your best. Choosing the perfect wedding suit is essential to looking and feeling your best on your big day.

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a wedding suit:

  • The occasion: The first thing to consider is the occasion. If you are having a formal wedding, you will want to choose a formal suit. If you are having a more casual wedding, you can choose a more casual suit.
  • The season: The time of year will also affect your choice of suit. In the summer, you will want to choose a lightweight suit made from a breathable fabric. In the winter, you will want to choose a heavier suit made from a warmer fabric.
  • Your personal style: Finally, you want to choose a suit that reflects your personal style. If you are a traditional guy, you may want to choose a classic black or navy suit. If you are a more modern guy, you may want to choose a suit in a bolder colour or with a more interesting pattern.

Style of Suit

The three-piece suit is the most traditional choice for the groom for his wedding day however there are many options to choose from including:

Tuxedo

A tuxedo is for extremely formal weddings that take place later in the day. They are always accompanied by a silk bow tie which can either be the traditional black or chosen to match the colour theme of the wedding.

Two or Three Piece Suit

The most popular choice for a wedding is the 3 piece suit. Choosing a three piece suit allows you an extensive range of styles, colours, fabrics etc. which suit your style, personality and the theme of your wedding. If you are getting married in less formal circumstances, you may prefer to opt for a 2 piece or your personal preference may draw you to this choice.

There are a few different styles of suits to choose from, including:

  • Single-breasted: Single-breasted suits are the most traditional style of suit. They are characterised by a single row of buttons on the jacket.
  • Double-breasted: Double-breasted suits are a more formal style of suit. They are characterised by two rows of buttons on the jacket.
  • Vented: Vented suits have a slit in the back of the jacket. This allows for more movement and makes the suit more comfortable to wear.
  • Unvented: Unvented suits do not have a slit in the back of the jacket. This makes the suit more formal and less casual.

Once you have chosen the perfect suit style, you need to choose the perfect suit fit. The suit should fit you snugly but not too tightly. It should also be long enough so that the hem of the jacket falls just below your fingertips when you are standing up straight.

Colour

While the groom is able to choose what he wants to wear, consideration should be given to the colour theme of the wedding. If you want a blue suit but the theme is for more neutral tones, you may want to reconsider. Also, it is common practise to match your pocket square or tie to the colour of the bridesmaid dresses so that everything fits nicely together. You don’t want to clash and draw attention to yourself for the wrong reasons.

Here are a few of the most popular wedding suit colours:

  • Black: Black is a classic wedding suit colour that is always in style. It is a versatile colour that can be dressed up or down, and it is perfect for any occasion.
  • Navy: Navy is another popular wedding suit colour that is both classic and stylish. It is a bit more casual than black, but it is still perfect for a formal wedding.
  • Charcoal: Charcoal is a versatile colour that is perfect for a groom who wants to look stylish without being too flashy. It is a good choice for a groom who is having a more casual wedding.
  • Grey: Grey is a classic wedding suit colour that is perfect for a groom who wants to look sophisticated. It is a good choice for a groom who is having a more formal wedding.

Consider the Season

Are you getting married in spring or summer? Is it a Christmas wedding? The time of year that you are getting married will have influence on the type of suit that you wear. It may affect your choice of colour for example, or the style and thickness of the fabric that you choose. You may want something lighter in summer for example.

Is it likely to rain? Will the material show rain spots? All of these points need to be considered when choosing a suit for the groom.

Hire or Buy a Groom’s Suit?

If you are looking at a one off 3 -piece suit for your special day, the chances are it is something you are only to wear once. Therefore, it is more practical and cost effective to hire a suit. If you are getting married on a beach, or in less formal circumstances, you may be happier purchasing a suit that you know you will get plenty of wear out of.

Personal Style

Of course, all of the above are just points to consider and this is very much your wedding. Your own personal style and taste will have a big influence on what you choose to wear to your wedding.

Finally, you need to choose the perfect suit accessories. This includes a shirt, tie, pocket square, and shoes. The shirt should be a light colour and made from a breathable fabric. The tie should be in a classic colour and pattern. The pocket square should be a complementary colour and fabric. The shoes should be polished and in a classic style.
