Arthur

January 1885 at a cost of £560 4s 10d (that's 560 pounds, 4 shillings and
10 pennies). |

The first week's trading saw sales of
£3 7s 91/2d, with expenses of only 10s. Within three years, taking
averaged over £20 per week.

Prior
to Mrs Griffin, the business was owned by Mr Nixon. It was during this
time that the shop was mentioned in the novel "Tom Brown's School
Days". Salters continues to enjoy the long association with Rugby
School. |

Quote from Tom Brown's School Days
|
|
|
| Tom
thought his cap a very knowing affair, but confessed that he had a hat in
his hat-box; which was accordingly at once extracted from the hind-boot,
and Tom equipped in his go-to- meeting roof, as his new friend called it.
But this didn't quite suit his fastidious taste in another minute, being
too shiny; so, as they walk up the town, they dive into Nixon's the
hatter's, and Tom is arrayed, to his utter astonishment, and without
paying for it, in a regulation cat-skin at seven-and- sixpence, Nixon
undertaking to send the best hat up to the matron's room, School-house, in
half an hour. |

|
|
|
| "You
can send in a note for a tile on Monday, and make it all right, you
know," said Mentor; "we're allowed two seven-and- sixers a half,
besides what we bring from home." |

|

|
As
you can see, the shop's facade has changed very little in the intervening
years. This picture was taken in the late 1800's. Arthur is shown here
with his son Aubrey who took over and ran the business until his death in
1952.

It
was at this point that his son, Alan Salter, picked up the reins and
embarked on a program of expansion, enlarging the sales area by adding a
second selling floor. After his sudden and untimely death aged only 41,
his wife, Elizabeth, carried on the good work.

Today
the shop is under the direction of the family’s fourth generation,
